Farm People

We established Hyde Away Acres in 2011, when we acquired the twenty acres that we now call our own. While we spent the first year and half renovating the barn into a house, we eventually started to focus on the land.

As you get to know us, you will learn that we love to spend time outdoors.  Both of us had grandparents that were traditional farmers and while we may not have followed the traditional pattern we did inherit a few genes that are currently contributing to what we are calling this organic journey.

  •     Innovative Ideas & Techniques- We are always willing to try new things and maybe put a
        twist on a traditional idea.
  •     Organic Way-  Our goal is to find more sustainable ways to produce healthy foods.
  •     Hard Work- While our friends and family sometimes think we are nuts the truth is we both
find working outdoors to be a stress reliever.

As we continue our journey, we encourage you to check back in with us from time to time and learn
what is new at Hyde Away Acres and ,of course, what is available come harvest time.

The Land

In 2011, our land  was primarily alfalfa and grass. The previous owners were not certified organic but took a natural approach to the land. As we began our transitional period we started to look at how we could improve the nutrients of the soil. We performed soil tests around the property to create a baseline. We worked with companies like Midwestern Bio Ag to provide guidance. As we continued to read, discuss, and ask questions we came across cover crops. Over the past three years we have worked with Albert Lea Seed Organic to try different cover crops aimed at helping us attain our goals of improving the soil.

Today, our land is certified organic and we have different crop fields. Our plans are more targeted towards the crop and soil rather than just the soil. We continue to do soil test and obviously monitoring the health of our trees and plants are a great indication. We are constantly learning and fine tuning our plans as we go.
